As of December 2016, NMFC classification changes went into effect, which characterized more items as density-based, altering them from straight class. This change has affected price, as the commodity is no longer the deterring factor of NMFC class, the density is. 
Freight classes are designed to help standardize pricing, but it can be a bit complicated to figure out how to classify a shipment. Some items are calculated by density and others are simply straight class. How does someone determine which is which?
Entire websites are devoted to tools and calculators that help determine class. They will usually call themselves easy to use, but will not guarantee accuracy. If it is incorrect, will they re-coop the cost? Highly doubtful.
At Freight Motion, we consider Freight Classification our job, not yours. If you send us accurate weight, dimensions and product description, we will never send a secondary invoice for something being re-classed. We take on that responsibility.
