At Freight Motion, we have clients who discuss various transportation issues they had in the past. We would like to share one here to raise awareness of underlying issues, market trends, and possible solutions.

Although rare, unfortunately, damage happens. Depending on who you ask damage happens with less than 3% of all shipments. When considering the millions of shipments moving all around the country, it is minimal. However, when damage occurs, it can create a big problem.

In this example, Company Z is shipping six pallets from their manufacturer. The LTL carrier picked up the six pallets, no problem, but when they unloaded them back at the terminal, a forklift damaged one of the pallets.

We instructed the LTL carrier to continue to ship the remaining five pallets as scheduled so Company Z could have most of the product on time. Simultaneously, we worked with the manufacturer to have a replacement available the following day. We had this shipped and delivered the following day after the other five pallets.

We filed a claim with the carrier and the client was reimbursed for the damaged product. What we learned however, is that it is not always about filing a claim and getting money back for something damaged. It was more important to get a replacement product to the receiver as quickly as possible.

Mistakes and damage happen. Having a plan in place is beneficial in order to act quickly.

How do you handle damages?
